Drafting of the Application Guideline of National Standard Maintenance and Repair of Sports Flooring

On August 12, the kick-off meeting and first working session for the development of the official application guideline supporting the national standard Maintenance and Repair of Sports Flooring was successfully convened. Representatives from industry associations, testing and certification institutions, sports flooring manufacturers and construction companies attended, discussing chapter assignments, drafting requirements, and the overall project timeline.

As China’s first dedicated national standard focusing on the in-service maintenance of sports flooring systems, this standard was initiated and centrally administered by the National Standardization Technical Committee of Sporting Goods (TC291), and co-developed by a consortium of 35 leading enterprises and public institutions in the sector. It has completed the full approval submission process in June 2026 and is about to be approved and issued. The standard aims to promote a shift in sports venue management from the long-standing "construction-first, maintenance-neglected" model to a standardized full lifecycle management framework.

The core objective of developing this supporting application guideline is to deliver highly intuitive, actionable and field-ready operational guidance for venue developers, facility operators, inspection authorities and on-site installation teams across the industry.

The guideline will be structured with core sections covering general introduction, scope and definitions, fundamental management provisions, routine maintenance specifications, professional repair protocols, sustainability assessment and venue renewal guidance, as well as verified case studies.

It will also include targeted, material-specific guidance for four mainstream sports flooring surfaces: synthetic athletic surfaces, artificial turf, wooden flooring and acrylic surfaces, and demonstrate the complete workflow of maintenance and repair through documented practical cases, to fully remove the barriers for the standard to be implemented on site.

With the sequential rollout of the formal standard and its supporting guideline, the sports flooring industry will establish a fully integrated management system spanning the entire value chain from manufacturing, installation, operation, maintenance, performance assessment to end-of-life renewal, delivering solid technical support for enhancing venue safety performance, extending facility service life and reducing whole-lifecycle renewal costs for all types of sports venues.
