The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) has unveiled the results of a recent study on the dangers of counterfeit goods for consumers, conducted with British quality assurance provider Intertek. The study focused on the dangers of hazardous chemicals and heavy metals. Tests were conducted on clothing, footwear and accessories. Of the 47 counterfeit products tested, 17 products (or 36.2 percent) failed to comply with U.S. product safety standards. Even more serious, the products that failed to meet these standards contained dangerous levels of substances like arsenic, cadmium, phthalates, lead, and others that cause adverse health outcomes.
