Unidays, a digital marketplace for student discounts and a networking platform, has conducted a new study among 3,279 of its (27 million worldwide) users in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. As Unidays is a student-only offering, the company connects with a purely Gen-Z target group. The Unidays Fashion Report 2023 sums up the users’ attitudes towards second hand apparel shopping and the resulting consequences for retailers.
The main takeaways from the paper are:
75 percent of students buy secondhand clothing
Nearly half of the study’s participants (47 percent) prefer buying in brick-and-mortar stores
64 percent want clothes to be manufactured to the highest standard (as re-selling of pre-loved clothes is popular and low quality clothing does not re-sell well)
76 percent shop used clothing to save money, whereas only 56 percent do so for sustainability reasons
Not only buying secondhand is popular, selling is too: According to the paper, 37 percent of U.K., 33 percent of Australian, and 22 percent of U.S. students sell their old clothes online. And while 72 percent of respondents said they sell their old clothes to make their fashion life cycle more sustainable, 91 percent stated they do it for financial reasons.
